Spiritual Formation of Men
One of the weekend of October, a group of 35 men, got together to begin a journey into the spiritual disciplines. When this opportunity was presented by Tom Madden, Associate pastor at Bay Presbyterian Church in Cleveland, Ohio, we couldn't imagine the impact that it would have.
Still when we begun preparations, "with lack of faith on our behalf", to our suprise we almost had all the available openings filled. As time was getting close we didn'k know what to do turn them down gently... we already had 5 over the initial number.
The rules were quite unusual but clearly defined - no cell phone, no watch, no music player - just a time to sharpen our listening abilities in relationship with God. This event was not fun-driven, recreational, but rather presenting an opportunity to hear God clearly.
The target was hit right in the bullseye.
We enjoyed special moments: solo time, solitude, foot washing, silence - very unusual things for all of us, as well as fellowship, sharing, communion, and worship.
Some of the testimonies:
"The devotional time in silence had a very special effect in my life, and also a great impact was achieved through foot washing."
"The strong point of this event for me was in prayer, making decisions for the future and relationships that were initiated and I look forward to developing them."
"I felt motivated and encouraged to serve, and get involved."
As a result, 33 men commited to go deeper and meet in a small group (3 small groups were formed) for the next 13 weeks! Praise God for what he begun in these men! Even more, the "virus" is spreading and other men have heard of the small groups and are joining in!
