Serving hearts
This was the third camp / VBS for the children in the Danube area affected by the floods. As you know, one group of young people from our church "adopted" those children. Between 80 and 130 children were there every day for the day camp. Last day the number has gone up to 150. Their needs are still huge. They are abandoning school so, in cooperation with the village school and the local government, our group of people have organized a Vacation Bible School type of program with 5 workshops: sports, music, arts, history and geography. We were trying to teach all those subjects in a different manner, in a creative way using our Bible teaching skills.
At the same time a hygienic campaign was launched to teach them how to clean themselves, how to brush their teeth, etc. Their health is in a bad shape. A doctor from Timisoara has traveled there and checked 130 children, gave them vitamins and other medicines according to their health state.
Besides all those needs, I thing the greatest are the emotional needs they manifest. Too many of them are abandoned by their parents who have gone abroad for work. Some of the children were left with their grandparents or uncles and aunts... others alone, totally alone, in an empty house with now food, no heating, no care. For me that is unbelievable... I cannot understand what kind of parents are they?
So, our young people, for a week, were their parents, friends and teachers. They know how to love. I'm proud of them. They are giving away what hey have received during past years. This is what our group have written in a note sent to me: "We are hoping that one day these little ones will inherit the Kingdom of Heaven, but until then we wish they'll see it and know it real and alive while they are there, in Rast."
